Intel introduced the RAMBus memory standard in their later Pentium 3 series and continued it in their Pentium P4 lineup. RAMBus Corporation was originally an independent company who developed RAMBus RAMs or RDRAMs. Though RDRAM technology didn’t show up good results initially, in the 1GHz+ CPU Pentium III platform, it did quite well on the then newer Pentium 4 platform which required more memory bandwidth the traditional PC133 SDRAMs could not provide.
Only dual channel RDRAM could feed a Pentium 4’s bandwidth needs. Unlike DDR, purchasing RDRAM is a little more tedious. Users of RDRAM must buy them in matching pairs in order to use them properly, this because of their 16 bit serial nature. Though, Rambus later introduced new 32-bit RDRAM which works in parallel and can be used in single sets, RDRAM never got popular and become nearly obsolete due to their high cost, compatibility issues and the emergence of a more advanced, dependable and cheaper DDR SDRAM standard; that’s still in use today in advanced forms.
Well, say if you have a PC which utilizes RDRAM and what to do if a memory module has gone defective or you want to upgrade the memory capacity? There are few stores which still sell RDRAM at very cheap prices in matched pairs. So, instead of discarding your PC for costly RDRAM with very limited availability, you can still use your PC. One such store I found today is CheapestRDRAM.com; claiming that they offer Rambus RDRAM Memory at the Cheapest Prices Online.
Cheapest RDRAM online store has PC800-45 RDRAM, PC800-40 RDRAM and PC1066 RDRAM for you to choose from in 2×256MB, 2×512Mb and 4×256MB matching pairs and sets compatible with branded computers from Dell, HP, Sony, Fujitsu, Alienware, Gateway, Compaq, Acer, etc. and mainboards from brands like Abit, Aopen, ASUS, DFI, Epox, Gigabyte, Intel and more which use the RDRAM architecture.
The site also features a very nice step by step RDRAM Installation Guide which will help even newbies to replace and upgrade their computer RDRAM memory. Their memory finder search engine will help you find the correct RDRAM memory compatible with your computer make. RDRAMs are generally costlier and sparingly available now; they are running a summer special with discounts…the prices look quite good to me.
So, if you have older PCs with RDRAM, think about upgrading the memory instead of discarding it altogether and adding to the problem of e-waste. ![]()
