While looking for a free or affordable online backup solution today, I came across IDriveE offering secure, encrypted and hands-free Online Backup solution.
They are offering free accounts with storage limits of upto 2GB ( without any backup and restore restrictions or bandwidth limits or file type restrictions ) and all the features of their affordable Pro version which offers unlimited storage for $4.95/month or $49.50 for a year, saving you the fees for 2 months.
If your are satisfied with the trial account and outgrow the 2GB space, they offer seamless account upgradation. Moreover, there’s no time limit on the free account…if you’re using under the 2GB, continue to use it as much as you like. IDrive-E also offers email, chat and telephone support for pro accounts.
IDriveE also has their supporting application for download. This free program allows you to make complete, hands-free, automated, remote backups of your files/folders. Store your photos, media files or other important documents. The helper application supports versioning, incremental backup, mapped drive backup, sync. etc.
IDriveE supporting application will enable mapped network drive on your windows explorer for easy operation and runs on Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2003 Server, Windows XP Home/Professional, Windows Vista. It also retains 30 individual versions of your backed up data.
The data is completely encrypted using AES 256bit encryption algorithm and you have a private key (sort of password) to cipher/decipher the backups…hence very safe and secure.
I’ve just registered a free account and set up the helper application on my PC. The features of IDriveE Online Backup seems to be really good for most of us and am quite satisfied with the free version so far. It’s free…try it today!

When I was assigned the task of finalizing the online backup service for my small sized company, I was in great state of confusion. There were variety of online backup services to choose and most of them seemed ‘attractive’. But being given very little time, I had to decide fast. After burning the midnight lamp, considering various services and consulting friends, I found that IDrive-E had what my company was looking for.
We could perform Online Backup of any file type easily with IDrive-E and customize our backups with the various options that the application provided. There were no file size limits for backups and restores imposed by IDrive-E. Moreover IDrive-E Pro offered us ‘additional accounts’ option wherein we could create and manage multiple user accounts from a single administrative login and a central console. For efficient maintenance, our company could even group additional accounts into department wise categories.
The enhanced security with 128-bit SSL encryption on transfers, 256-bit AES encryption on storage with a user defined key that is not stored anywhere on IDrive-E servers made it the most secure online backup service our company could rely on http://www.idrive.com
We started using it and I have to congratulate the IDrive-E team for the great service they have provided.

Drive-E claims their $4.95 plan is unlimited storage, but if you take a few minutes to read their conditions of use, you find that unlimited is redefined to mean 150GB.
Huh? Last time I checked, unlimited meant no limit. How can anyone trust a backup company that buries something like that in their legal agreement? If you don’t believe me, here it is straight from the horses mouth (http://www.idrive.com/terms.htm#2)
A note on the concept of ‘unlimited storage’ for IDrive-E-Pro
(http://www.idrive.com/pricing.htm) - In addition, it is important to understand the definition of ‘Unlimited’ Storage. No storage system can really be unlimited. The concept of ‘Unlimited’ storage is to facilitate a low one-price plan to backup a PC’s critical data that meets the requirement for majority of users for personal use and not to burden users with multiple plans. Any usage of storage and bandwidth that is several multiples of average paid IDrive-E user may be considered as unfair use, this limit from storage point is currently fixed at 150GB and subject to changes. Users exceeding the 150GB limit may choose to upgrade to a business plan; In case of non-action by the users on notification of excess usage, accounts may be cancelled and data removed.
A note on the concept of overuse over chosen/allocated quota for IDrive-E-Pro
For usage beyond the opted plan for business plans, there may be an overuse charge at the rate of $0.50/GB/Month. While it is not necessary, we encourage users to upgrade to one of the higher storage plans from (http://www.idrive.com/pricing.htm) if their usage exceeds the opted plan to avoid the overuse charges.
Why use the term unlimited when it clearly is not? At the very least this is way out of ethical trade description. At worst it will lead to unexpected bills for your .50 per gig per month on excess. I would not deal with idrive after discovering this.
