Intel introduced the RAMBus memory standard in their later Pentium 3 series and continued it in their Pentium P4 lineup. RAMBus Corporation was originally an independent company who developed RAMBus RAMs or RDRAMs. Though RDRAM technology didn’t show up good results initially, in the 1GHz+ CPU Pentium III platform, it did quite well on the then newer Pentium 4 platform which required more memory bandwidth the traditional PC133 SDRAMs could not provide.
Only dual channel RDRAM could feed a Pentium 4’s bandwidth needs. Unlike DDR, purchasing RDRAM is a little more tedious. Users of RDRAM must buy them in matching pairs in order to use them properly, this because of their 16 bit serial …
